The Optimist

The Hoper of Far Flung Hopes and the Dreamer of Improbable Dreams

Keeping it dead simple - this is a Doctor Who opinion blog. Everything I post is my own opinion, you don't have to agree with it, and it does not necessarily reflect the actual opinions of anyone important. My aim is to suggest new and different ways of thinking about elements of Doctors Who, not to persuade you that my way is the only or best way of thinking about it

The Doctor Cries

Writer: Chrisrs123Chrisrs123

There is a TV mantra that if you let the characters cry then you let the audience feel they don't have to and you get more of an emotional punch from them trying to look strong. Usually the Doctor tries to put on a brave face no matter the situation. Ten particularly spent a long time staring emotionally into the distance.

The tears can be very effective when done on rare occassions though. Whether it's a single tear at the loss of a companion or a silent meltdown as you realise you're being forced to go to your grave, it feels like a big thing when the Doctor cries.

I think if you see someone who usually looks strong for other people, like the Doctor, actually break down at something, it's very powerful because you know that wouldn't happen unless the emotional impact is huge.
